FDA Sets Up Meeting to Discuss New Dietary Ingredients (NDIs)

This comment period and meeting has been set-up by the FDA to "help aid the dietary supplement industry to respond better to the requirements of DSHEA".

International pharmacudical companies and those representing their interests are focusing on dismantling the Dietary Supplement Health Act(DSHEA) through FDA meetings and legislation. It's important to be vigilant on any such moves.

CODEX UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 27, 2004 The Codex Alimentarius Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses will meet from 1 to 5 November in Bonn,Germany in order to finalize a Codex Alimentarius Guideline for Vitamin and Mineral Supplements. South Africia was asked not to come this year but, from pressure placed on the CODEX Committee is now being allowed to attend. South Africia isn't all that welcome because they are the only voting country who is against these CODEX standards. Even the FDA (USA only voting delegate) is for these standards even though this is out of compilance with USA law (see www.iahf.com for the details).

On the agenda of the committee are the vitamin guideline which should be finalized this year, but also a guideline for the use of nutrition claims on food labels or in promoting foods, proposals for new nutrient reference values we find on food labels, a standard for infant formula and other business. The members of Codex Alimentarius are countries, but the representatives to this particular committee are shaping our future nutrition...globally.
